Main.About Kevin Tierney.net

My name is Kevin Tierney and I am currently a masters student at Brown Universityin Computer Science. I graduated in 2008 from RIT with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science with a minor in German.

While not in Providence I live on Block Island, RI, a beautiful island 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, and 16 miles off the coast of Montauk, Long Island.

The first time I ever coded was when I was in 6th grade. I made a simple website on Angelfire. (Back before it stuck compulsory advertisements on webpages) I was hooked to playing with HTML and went to computer camp to learn BASIC. I found BASIC quite easy and moved on to learning Visual Basic 5 with a friend to write various programs. Fast forwarding to 10th grade, I got my first job. (Besides my failed foray into the world of bicycle rentals, and semi-successful period in the take-out business, that is). I worked for The Worx Group (2 years), then known as WebWorx LLC in Prospect, CT, as a Production Assistant, before getting hired by Dr. Mark Brandon in Yale's Kline Geology Lab (2 years). I worked on various applications for Dr. Brandon in Visual Basic .NET and Matlab to aid various mathematical calculations as well as handling microscope and tablet input.

During my entire time in high school I experimented with many different languages, including ASP, C#, PHP, and more (see my resume for a complete list of skills). This period of programming exploration helped me learn how to learn new languages and technologies quickly, as I was always switching between them almost on a weekly basis.

While working for Dr. Brandon, I graduated from Amity Regional High School in Connecticut and was accepted to the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY to major in Computer Science.

In my second year at RIT I studied abroad at the Universität Osnabrück, in Osnabrück, Germany from September 28, 2005 to March 1, 2006. Under the Cognitive Science department, I took classes about data mining and artificial intelligence, in addition to a German class and a class about German culture and history entitled Deutsche Landeskunde. During my time abroad I learned volumes about different cultures, got to travel around Europe, and came home with a reasonable understanding of German. Despite being back in the USA, I practice my German as much as possible and continue to learn more.
